Where Do Couples Have Sex? The Bedroom Wins, But Not Alone

Where do couples have sex? The bedroom, most of the time, and it is not a close race.

That is a boring answer, and we are a little sorry about it. It is also completely correct. The first place that comes to mind turns out to be the place that keeps happening, far ahead of every other room in the house. The bedroom is not so much competing with the other rooms as ignoring them.

So where do couples have sex most often?

The bedroom is the most common place by a wide margin. After it come the living room, the shower, the restroom, a general Home option, the hotel, and the kitchen. Combine the shower and restroom and the bathroom edges past the living room. Everywhere else is rare.

One thing before we start. These numbers show where. They say nothing whatsoever about why. So everything below that sounds like an explanation is us guessing, and we will say so each time.

Where it happens, once you set the bedroom aside

The bedroom is far ahead of all of these. This chart is the race for second place.

The living room takes second place, just about

Of the individual rooms, the living room comes second.

Why? No idea. Honestly, none. It does have a couch in it, and it is the room people are already sitting in.

The bedroom is maybe 15 seconds down the hall. Some people, apparently, do not have 15 seconds. (A guess. A fun one, but a guess.)

Put the two bathroom options together and it gets interesting

Shower and restroom sit third and fourth on their own. Add them up and the bathroom quietly overtakes the living room for second place overall.

That is the sort of thing you only catch by squinting at a list. The bathroom is nobody's first thought, and it is beating the room with the couch.

Our best guess involves a door that locks. That is as far as this takes us, which is not very far.

Home apparently means anywhere in the house

There is an option called simply Home, and it lands comfortably in the top five.

Which is a little funny, because the bedroom is home. The living room is home. The kitchen and the shower are home. Whatever Home means to the people choosing it, it is not a room.

Our reading, and it is only a reading: it is what you pick when the true answer is "around the house, somewhere" and the exact room is nobody's business. Not every moment comes with a floor plan.

The hotel is the only away option that keeps up

Every other place outside the home drops off fast. The hotel does not.

It sits right alongside the indoor rooms, which is a pleasing result for anyone who has ever booked a night away for no particular reason. Why it holds up we cannot say. That it holds up is the one thing here we can.

Everything else is rarer than you might hope

This is where the wilder answers go to lose.

The car, the garage, the backyard, the pool, the beach, the plane, the train, and the museum all turn up. Every one of them is rare. Not zero, but nowhere near the rooms above.

One small surprise. Enough people write in a place of their own that the write-in option lands ahead of the car. What those places are, we could not tell you. They are counted together and never listed separately, which feels like the right arrangement for everyone concerned.

What we can and cannot tell you

We can give you the ranking. We cannot give you the reasons, and it would be easy to pretend otherwise.

If you want a theory, here is ours, offered with no evidence at all: the places that win are the ones that need no planning. The bedroom is right there. The living room is closer still. The bathroom has the door. The hotel handles everything at once.

The honest version is simpler, and nicer. Most of this happens close to home, in ordinary rooms people walk through all the time without giving them a thought. Not exotic. Not a secret. Just near the bed.

If the rhythm interests you more than the map, we also looked at how often couples have sex and how long sex lasts.
